Frequently asked questions about Oncut

Oncut, the rough-cut plugin for Premiere Pro: what it cuts, where it runs, what it costs. Missing a question? Write to [email protected].

How it works

What does Oncut do, in two sentences?

Oncut cuts the dead air and the repeated words from your footage into a new “— Oncut” sequence, next to the original, with a 2-frame audio fade on every cut. It all runs on your computer, and your original sequence stays untouched.

What does Oncut not do?

It does not edit the video for you: no subtitles, no graphics, no music. It does not run in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve yet (soon), and it only transcribes French speech for now. Prices are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install Oncut?

Download the Oncut installer, for Mac or for Windows, and run it: it sets up everything Oncut needs, with nothing to configure. Then open Premiere Pro: the panel is under Window › UXP Plugins › Oncut.

Does Oncut work on Windows?

Yes: Oncut runs on Mac and on Windows, with Premiere Pro 26.3 or later. One subscription covers both.

How long does the analysis take?

On a 1 h 14 rush, the analysis took 1 min 54 s on the editor’s computer. It depends on the length of the rush and on the machine.

Which editing software does it work with?

Premiere Pro today. Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve are on the way: they stay marked “soon” until they ship. One subscription covers all three. Oncut runs on Mac and Windows.

Does it work with several tracks?

Yes: every track in the sequence is cut together and stays in sync. On a multitrack talking-head rush with a screen capture, Oncut made 1,054 cuts.

What if there is music under the voice?

Rough-cut before adding music: Oncut cuts all tracks together, so music already in place would be cut too. Add it afterwards on the “— Oncut” sequence.

Which spoken languages are supported?

French for now: transcription, and therefore the detection of repeated words, only works in French.

Is my footage sent anywhere?

No. The analysis runs on your machine: your footage never leaves your computer, with no upload and no server. Oncut works offline.

What happens to my original sequence?

It stays untouched. Oncut creates a new “— Oncut” sequence next to the original and never edits your timeline.

How do the trial and billing work?

When it opens, the trial will last 14 days with no credit card: your email will be enough. To keep going, you will just add your card; otherwise nothing is charged. After that it will be €9.90 a month or €79 a year (4 months free), VAT included.

Can I try it without a card?

Yes: when it opens, the 14-day trial will need no credit card. You will add one only if you keep going after the trial; without a card, nothing is charged.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes, at any time, with no notice period. If you cancel during the trial, you pay nothing.

What does the 2-frame fade do?

On every cut, the sound of the outgoing shot fades out while the next one fades in, over 2 frames, at constant power: no dip in volume, no click or “pop” at the join.

Can I undo a cut?

Yes. Every cut is an ordinary edit in the “— Oncut” sequence: extend a shot with the usual Premiere tools, the media is complete. And your original sequence is still there, untouched.

Which Premiere Pro versions are supported?

Premiere Pro 26.3 or later, on Mac and Windows. Oncut opens in Premiere as a panel: Window > UXP Plugins > Oncut.

What does Oncut count as a repeat?

A word, or a group of two words, said again straight after. Oncut cuts the first ones and keeps the last. When it is not sure, the cut stays “to review” and you decide.

Can I set the pace of the cuts?

Yes: the panel offers four paces, Steady, Natural, Dynamic and Very snappy, from the most air to the tightest. A 2-frame audio fade is added on every cut every time.
